In a residential district in South Korea, an elderly couple owns a white dog named Dangkyou. The dog was usually let loose in the couple’s house. But whenever the dog finds a way out, it sneaks away from the property and roams the nearby streets.
Every time the couple notices that their dog went missing, they go out of the house and search for it. When the couple finds the dog, it runs further away. But after a while, the dog would stop and let its owners catch it.
Dangkyou’s annoying habit of escaping
The owner would tie the dog with a leash as punishment for running away. But after a few hours, the owners would feel pity and let the dog free again. Once free, the dog would loiter around the couple’s fence.
The dog checks the fence for any weak spot. Then when it finds one, it waits until its owners stay inside the house. When the coast is clear, the dog tries to break out again.
The dog’s routine of escaping, then running away from its owners, and going back to the house almost every day made the owners tired and annoyed with their dog’s behavior. They consulted an animal behavior expert on what they needed to do to change their dog.
The next day, the consultant came to their house. He witnessed Dangkyou escape and the couple chased after it. He saw that the dog never went away very far.
The consultant went after the couple and told them to stop chasing the dog. When they turned away, the dog stopped and walked back to them. When they entered their gate, they closed it and prevented the dog to enter.
The dog only wants more attention
The consultant explained that the dog escapes from the house for the purpose of getting the attention of its owners. When its owners chase after it, the dog thinks it found a way to play with the couple. The couple realized that they were too busy with work that they no longer play with Dangkyou.
The couple tried to play hide and seek within the yard and the house with Dangkyou. They spent more time with their dog during the day. After some time, Dangkyou no longer has the urge to escape.
