Being a hero doesn’t require someone to die for a country or be a martyr. However, there are common traits that make someone qualified to be called one. One of those is the undying dedication to service. The other one is compassion.
The two traits mentioned above are possessed by a woman named Francesca. She’s a person who has dedicated her life to helping dogs in Bali, Indonesia. Every day she travels to Bali’s streets carrying sacks of dog food and going to locations where stray dogs need to be fed.
Francesca doesn’t have an organization. She feeds dogs on her own with her money. She has no car, but she drives around in her scooter to spot stray dogs. Of course, she brings them to nearby shelters.
For over fifteen years, Francesca has rescued around 2000 dogs. Her goal is to make the locals view dogs differently. The people of Bali don’t appreciate their dogs as much as they should.
Francesca doesn’t have a big plan, like building her own shelter. However, she donates to existing shelters whenever she can. She goes around visiting different animal rescue organizations and offers help when needed.
Her goal when rescuing dogs is straightforward. Each dog must be vaccinated, sterilized, and given shelter. The ultimate goal is to have the dogs be adopted and treated how they deserve to be treated.
Francesca sees Bali dogs as the perfect companion. They are traditional, majestic, and deserve a lot of respect. She can’t imagine her life in Bali doing anything else.
Francesca is an example of a different type of hero. She’s the hero that is committed to animals in need. It has come to the point that rescuing is what her life is about. That’s why organizations like The Dodo celebrate people like her.
