This story about an abandoned senior Shih Tzu will remind all of us that looks can indeed be deceiving, and there’s nothing that a little TLC cannot fix.
Magnolia arrived at this animal shelter in South Carolina in a relatively poor state. Nobody knew what kind of life she had before she got there, but her severely matted fur left a lot of speculations about the sort of neglect and abuse she had to endure. Staff at the Lancaster Animals Shelter had to get in touch with the Lancaster SPCA to ensure she can get the care she needed.
They were confounded with the condition she was in, but they vowed to support and care for her. The dog’s path to healing begins when none other than Diana B. Knight, the Lancaster SPCA president, took responsibility for Magnolia’s rehabilitation herself.
Magnolia was believed to be about nine or ten years old when she was brought to the facility. Obviously, her uncaring owners ignored and neglected her grooming for years. She was trapped in her own fur, and during instances like this, it can be excruciating and unhygienic for a dog. In fact, she was covered in the smell of her own urine.
It took a village to help with her makeover, but eventually, Magnolia was cleaned up and given a haircut—making her look like a brand new dog in no time!
The little darling seemed to have some life revived back into her, as she appeared happy to play and run around again after she got shaved. Aside from this, she had an intense longing for affection—always wanting to be petted and cuddled, as if making up for all those years she had been lonely.
In an interview, Knight was ecstatic to announce that post-makeover, Magnolia enjoys car rides, toys, walks, and being spoiled by her visitors. After all, she has been neglected for almost a decade.
And even though she has a senior dog’s status, shelter staff believe Magnolia has so much more to offer and is viable for a second chance at a good life with a new family. This made them encourage other people to adopt her.
It took her a while to get over her past predicament, but she spent time with other Shih Tzus who were also fostered as she was recovering. Magnolia is a ‘typical Shih Tzu’ who just craves love and attention.
As for the best part of her story? She got adopted in early January of this year by a family who will never neglect her again!
