Jake, the malamute, arrived at Chemung County SPCA carrying double his normal weight. Thankfully, a loving couple took a chance on him and did everything they can to help him shed off his unhealthy pounds.
Jake’s tremendous weight
Jake weighs over 200 pounds. His ideal healthy weight is 110 pounds. Clearly, Jake needs to shed off almost half of his weight to keep himself fit and healthy. But the problem is he couldn’t do it alone.
Amanda Lippincott and her husband were touched by Jake’s plight. Initially, they only wanted to sponsor his food, but they ended up fostering him. And as foster parents, the couple wish to do everything they can to help Jake become a healthier pooch.
Jake’s weight loss journey
The Lippincotts started feeding Jake low-calorie food. His meals consisted of wet and dry food, and he eats once in the morning and once at night. Just like any other dog, Jake also enjoys treats. His parents occasionally give him some, but they were always mindful of his food intake.
Next, they needed to get Jake moving. Since Jake is a massive dog and can easily overheat during the warm times of the day, so they opt to walk him early in the morning and at night. Jake walks a total of 14 miles per week. Additionally, Jake also takes supplements to keep his joints healthy.
Jake has shed off 17 pounds since he came to live with his foster parents. Through diet, exercise and lots of love and support from his parents, Jake is starting to lose some of those unwanted pounds.
Jake is still far from his ideal weight, but thanks to his foster mom and dad, he is making progress each day. His determination to achieve a healthier body is truly admirable. Way to go, Jake!
