When the Tibetan Terrier mix Benji was found in a garbage dump in Romania, it was clear that he had been through something horrible. He had a broken spine from getting beaten up and also appeared to be paralyzed from the waist down.
Flori’s Friends Rescue, a charity that helps abused and neglected animals around Europe, took the pup to specialized veterinary care to get treated right away. However, they were informed that he would need a double amputation surgery for the best chance of independence.
The surgery would cost a fortune, though, so the charity decided to start a fundraising program. They began sharing the canine’s story on the internet and encouraged people to donate. Among those who chipped in for Benji’s surgery was London resident Philippa Esson.
Philippa’s three kids always wanted to have a dog, so when her daughter, Isabelle, saw the terrier’s heartbreaking story online, she encouraged her mom to donate. From there, they began following Benji’s journey to recovery. They watched as the pup grew stronger each day until he was finally ready to get adopted.
However, Benji’s first UK adoption fell through last year. And that was when Philippa and her family decided to step in and give him the loving home he deserved. They sent an application to adopt the pup, and the next thing they knew, Benji was on his way to London.
It was not easy to earn the trust of the timid pup at first, but the terrier eventually grew closer to his new family and realized that he was finally safe. He is now happily enjoying his life as a city dog on a custom-made wheelchair, earning the love and attention of people around him.
Although he had a rough start in life, Benji knows that he is finally where he belongs with Philippa and her family. Look at the adorable rescue dog and his newfound human siblings here.
